If you’re a fan of last year’s adaptation of the Gerard Way-penned comic “The Umbrella Academy” (what a time to be alive), here’s some good news: Season two just got a release date. Netflix will be dropping a 10-episode season on Jul. 31, continuing where we left off after the dramatic cliffhanger from the previous season finale.
The cast announced the news by releasing a quarantine version of their now-iconic solo dance party; instead of dancing “I Think We’re Alone Now” in separate rooms of their country manor, with the camera flashing to each character like they’re in a dollhouse, the cast recreated it from their own homes. The quarantine dance party notably features two cast members who weren’t in the original scene: (just reading the cast names might be a semi-spoiler if you didn’t finish the first season, so spoiler alert!) Aidan Gallagher who plays Number Five and Justin H. Min who plays Ben Hargreeves.
As Bustle notes, the announcement video doesn’t really give much away about what’s going to take place in the upcoming season (or even in which time period it’s going to take place in—again, dramatic maybe time travelling cliffhanger), so we’re still in the dark about what’s going to happen. As showrunner Steve Blackman told Hollywood Reporter about the season one finale last year: “The truth is, we don’t know where they are. We don’t know what happened to them. I wanted this to really be the best of cliffhangers, in that you’re like ‘Wait, what? What happened?’ It gives us a lot of openness and legroom to tell the best story we can next year.”
Flipping to the graphic novel (which, btw, is still ongoing) might not clue you in, either. “They did not save the world, which is a slight alteration of the comic,” said Blackman in the same interview. Guess we’ll have to tune in this July to see.
