Netflix is launching a new anime film this Jun. 18. Called “A Whisker Away,” it’s directed by original “Sailor Moon” director Junichi Satoh and Tomotaka Shibayama. The screenplay was written by Mari Okada, who also wrote “Anohana” (otherwise known as the sad anime of spring 2011) and the anime adaptations of “Black Butler” and “Toradora,” among others. With that track record, prepare for an emotional rollercoaster.
The film follows Miyo Sasaki, who transforms into a cat to get her crush’s attention, which is Sailor Moon-esque as heck—that is, if Usagi transformed into Luna instead of the crystal princess. The logline of the movie ends with: “She realizes that the only way to get close to him is to transform into a cat, but at some point, the boundary between herself and the cat becomes ambiguous, and she is forced to give up her life as a human,” which should clue you into what the film’s going to be like.
While waiting for the movie to arrive, you can check out the trailer. Among other things, it shows a hidden cat sanctuary (village? utopia?) made up of people who’ve turned their backs on humanity to live the rest of their lives as cats (an elder cat asks her, “Why would you go back to your miserable human experience?”), which honestly is the realest mood of 2020.
