Heralding Christmas 2020 are Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis—two stars beloved among sapphic fans. With the season of giving just around the corner, People magazine dropped exclusive stills from the wholesome lesbian Christmas romantic comedy starring the pair. Yes, wlw community, you deserve to see this.
All I ever wanted was a holiday movie that represented my experience so I decided to make one. Here’s a first look at @HappiestSeason courtesy of @people!!! ❤️💚🎄💚❤️ pic.twitter.com/91jQ9kEDkH

Titled “Happiest Season,” the film follows the story of Abby (played by Stewart) who plans to propose at her girlfriend’s family holiday party, only to discover that Harper (played by Davis) hasn’t come out to her conservative parents yet. Coming to U.S. theaters on Nov. 25, we’re excited to find out how director and co-writer Clea DuVall will turn this angsty premise for her lighthearted tale.
In the sneak peeks, we see Abby and Harper ice-skating together, sharing a laugh and hugging for a family picture. The photos are definitely giving us warm and fuzzy feelings. We’re hopeful that it won’t end up being open-ended like “San Junipero.” Give us a happy ending. The world needs more happy queer movies.
Duvall, who you may know from “But I’m a Cheerleader” and other queer classics, shares with People, “I’m a huge fan of Christmas movies, but I had never seen my story represented. ‘Happiest Season’ felt like a great opportunity to tell a universal story from a new perspective.”
Sharing a similar sentiment, Stewart adds, “I think I’ve wished to see a gay Christmas rom-com my whole life. I’m so happy and proud of Clea for bringing this into the world.”
Back in June, “Happiest Season” posted a Pride month greeting on Instagram where the cast had rainbow flags and signages on equality. Duvall and the leads were joined by big TV stars Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Victor Garber, Mary Steenburgen and Mary Holland.
It’s time we make gay Christmas movies a thing. Who’s with us on this?
