Aswangs and tikbalangs of Manila beware! We finally got a first look at the upcoming local Netflix anime “Trese,” right in time for the spooky season.
On Oct. 27, Netflix released two images featuring the badass titular character Alexandra Trese—one of her peering over a rainy city and another of her clutching a bloody knife. Created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, the local comic book series tells the story of bar owner slash paranormal investigator Alexandra as she assists the Manila police in dealing with supernatural cases together with her trusty twin bodyguards Crispin and Basilio.
Inspired by Philippine mythology and folklore, “Trese” built a cult following since the release of its first volume “TRESE Book 1: Murder on Balete Drive” in 2005. Fans were in for a treat as Netflix announced in 2018 that the critically acclaimed graphic novel would become an original anime series with executive producer Jay Oliva, known for his work in “Wonder Woman,” “Justice League: Dark” and “The Legend of Korra.”
Fulfilling the creators’ lifelong wish of gaining a worldwide audience, the local comic book series recently acquired an American publisher and is set to release a full English and redrawn version of “Murder on Balete Drive” for the North American market in November and “TRESE Book 2: Unreported Murders” in April 2021.
While we still don’t have a specific release date for its official drop on the streaming platform in 2021, the eighth volume is reportedly in the works and scheduled for release within this year.
