Cat memes, #catsofinstagram, and other animal-related sensations—they’re a serious obsession of our times. These furry felines have taken over our consciousness; there’s even a study proving that watching cat videos relieves you of stress. Gone are the days wherein we associate these creatures with just urban legends and the image of the unmarried, “crazy cat lady.”
Here then is the ultimate haven for you cat lovers: a cat café. Miao Cat Café is located along Congressional Avenue, hidden among the mix of commercial and industrial offices. It is discreet without any large signs or catchy gimmicks. The lure of sweets and treats plus time with some cats is enough to lure in just about anyone who could use a break and uncomplicated coffee dates.
Though cat cafés aren’t exactly new in Asia (the first establishment of this kind was opened in Taiwan in 1998 and has quickly gained traction in Japan in the past few years), Miao is the first one in the Philippines. Cozy and quiet, the only sounds you will hear are the docile sounds of the 20 cats owned and cared for by proprietors Sam Ramos and Loida Benson.
Visitors are charged for two hours worth of playtime with the furballs that include a meal and a beverage of their choice. Offerings include unique concoctions like Oreo cappuccino and Kisses Caramel. You’ll get to sip and bite some sweet, comforting delights, while enjoying the company of British shorthairs, Persian cats and puspins (pusang Pinoy). “It’s a different experience. It’s very homey. It’s a place for people to de-stress,” shares Sam. Indeed, don’t we always say that good food becomes even better with good company?
