Mitski’s long-awaited return is almost here and she picked one hell of a time for it. Mercury is in retrograde (which might have had something to do with the Facebook services global outage). Most of Earth’s population is knee-deep in (pandemic-related) emotional turbulence and regression. In the midst of this chaos, we could really use some new music from the artist who has been unofficially dubbed as “the 21st century’s poet laureate of young adulthood,” among other things.
Mitski announced last night, Oct. 4, that she will be releasing a new song today, Oct. 5. The singer-songwriter is keeping the rest of the details about the song under wraps. However, we can make a few guesses from the teaser photo of Mitski with her back turned while wearing a black leather coat and cowboy hat combo. Is this new era a “Be the Cowboy” 2.0? Or is the cowboy hat a ruse so that we wouldn’t expect a complete 180 like Lorde did with “Solar Power”?

While Mitski is returning with new music, it doesn’t seem like she will have a social media comeback anytime soon. In June 2019, Mitski announced that her New York Central Park “SummerStage” performance was her “last show indefinitely” and that she will be “deleting socials.” Her Twitter and Instagram accounts are up again, though, currently handled by her management.
Since her break from the public eye, she has released “Cop Car” for horror flick “The Turning”, “The Baddy Man” for graphic novel “This Is Where We Fall,” and the deliciously queer “Susie Save Your Love” collab with Allie X.
New to Mitski Town? The Japanese-American artist gained prominence with the release of her critically acclaimed 2016 indie rock album “Puberty 2” which includes tracks such as “Your Best American Girl” and “I Bet on Losing Dogs.” That’s not to say that previous albums such as 2014’s “Bury Me at Makeout Creek” and 2013’s “Retired from Sad, New Career in Business” didn’t have their fair share of devoted listeners. She’s known for her vulnerable lyrics and clever production technique that can pair melodious pop with gut-wrenching shouts.
Whatever Mitski is dropping tonight, it’s probably best to prep for an ugly cry sesh. We can all have a little emotional release as a treat.
