“Naloko ka na ba ng pagmamahal sa maling tao? ’Yung akala mo gold medalist ka na, tapos fake news pala?” Angelica Panganiban starts off a newly released love month-appropriate PSA with this killer intro. The sip of tea beforehand felt like a wink that meant, “The girls that get it, get it.”
The actress, who’s doled out advice in her agony aunt show and as sex guru Dr. Kara Teo in “The Kangks Show,” sounds all too relatable as she shares her past experiences as a former sawi in love and democratic engagement in the video. Writer and producer Noel Ferrer released the responsible voting PSA on Instagram on Feb. 1 with the caption, “Simula ngayong LOVE MONTH hanggang sa eleksyon, HUWAG PAPABUDOL…lalo na sa mga SINUNGALING at MAGNANAKAW!!!”
“Ninakawan ako ng pag-asa at pangarap,” says Panganiban, implying that losing trust in a candidate you once supported hurts as much as a breakup. “Minahal ko eh. Ipinagtanggol ko pa nga sa mga friends ko. Pero wala. Nganga. Mambubudol pala.”
It’s interesting to note that when the government started receiving backlash over quarantine protocols in 2020, Panganiban criticized the administration and apologized for previously supporting President Rodrigo Duterte. The line “I’ve learned my lesson kaya sana ikaw rin” in the PSA seems like a direct nod to that change of mind.
Panganiban added that it’s imperative for us to get to know all the candidates and their histories. “Kaya ngayong eleksyon sa May 2022, ingat-ingat sa mga tao. Kilatising mabuti ang mga manliligaw. Halughugin ang biodata mula high school hanggang college. Alamin at tignan ang character references,” she advises.
Could this be alluding to former senator Bongbong Marcos’s much-contested claim that he attended Oxford University and the Wharton School? Although the presidential aspirant’s camp maintains that his education was never misrepresented, Oxford University and Filipino students have felt the need to clarify that Marcos did not complete his degree but was awarded a special diploma that is akin to finishing an online course offering today.
Panganiban ends her PSA with these parting words: “Huwag magpapabudol at huwag sa magnanakaw.” It’s up to us voters to interpret that and keep it in mind come election day.
