Starbucks just can’t seem to catch a break on the Internet. This time? It’s for their cookies. Their polar bear treats make a controversial comeback in the US for the scarf the animal is wearing. Instead of its traditional blue scarves, the bears are decorated with red ones—the worst choice their baker could ever make.
Netizens pointed out that the red scarf makes it look as if the polar bear’s neck was slit and bleeding profusely.
This is not the first time their roster of holiday-themed products isn’t putting smiles on customers’ faces. Starbucks’ minimalist, festive red design on their holiday cups also caused an uproar a month ago for forgoing the usual tradition, causing backlash from several evangelical Christians. Looks like even a cup of Pumpkin Spice Latté can’t control that much damage.
Somebody please tell Starbucks that red is not their color for the year—and probably never will be. They might as well start consulting the Pantone Institute soon, just like any other conscious and sensitive brand out there.
