Filipino Designer Seph Bagasao Mixes Denim and Knit for Amazon Fashion Week

Denim is proving to be a versatile material in the fashion world. It can look rugged and also soft when mixed with the right fabrics like silk. Seph Bagasao went for this route to showcase a collection named “Scars of Beauty” at the Amazon Fashion Week in Tokyo.

“[The collection is] about a boy running to get out of the dark forest searching for light, trying to escape a past of sadness, misery and seeking for answers about the uncertainties of yesterday. A strong boy, he did not mind getting cut and being scarred by the thorns, stones and branches because he knows that at the end, these scars will make the clear sky feels much more beautiful,” Seph explains.

Together with other Filipino designers Ben Chan for Bench, Carl Jan Cruz, and Karen Topacio, they showed their own take on Philippine fashion to the Japanese crowd.

For Seph, it was all about utilizing different shades and washes of denim and combining them with knit fabrics. “We mainly used denim and knit because of its versatility. It was more about creating texture and contrast using versatile fabric because we aim to create pieces that can season less. We want our consumers to buy our pieces not because of the season but because of its design value,” he tells us.

The collection consists mostly of deconstructed tops and vests with fringed touches on the skirts, pants, and even the tops’ collars and sleeves. Another thing to note is that the hems looked worn out and frayed which adds to the boho effect. It also had a dominant blue palette and a few redder shades.

The ensembles have a workwear feel to them which you can interchange if you want to make the most out of the Seph’s pieces. You can also find nifty leather bags with the same denim and fringed detail to match your outfit.

So, what’s next for the young designer? “We will continue making capsule collection and do presentations rather than shows as it can be more personal. The consumers can have a better look and feel of our pieces since our collection are very much into details,” Seph says.
