Pirelli has indeed shifted from less skin to more talent for their 2017 calendar. Instead of the usual scantily-clad women, the upcoming calendar features 14 famous women—Charlotte Rampling, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Lea Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Rooney Mara, Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren, Zhang Ziyi, and Anastacia Ignatova—that are fully clothed and unretouched.
The first few photos lensed by Peter Lindbergh were released and it all came in black and white. Uma Thurman wearing a cozy knit sweater, Nicole Kidman and Robin Wright in a black bodysuit, and more. Peter named the project “Emotional,” because they wanted “to create a calendar not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked.”
Peter adds, “In the time when women are represented in the media, in every way else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful, and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests. That is important, no? Beauty that speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself, and your very own sensibility. That’s my definition of a woman today. That is the goal of the calendar, to show that woman and not the stretched and manipulated [woman often shown in the media].”
These are changes that we definitely look forward to and we can’t wait to see the rest of the images come the release of the calendar.
