On Jan. 10, a New York court will decide if Laura Kim can pursue her job as co-creative director at Oscar De La Renta due to a conflict in contract with her previous employer, Carolina Herrera.
A gruesome battle between Carolina and her senior vice-president of design Laura is a back-and-forth mess of statements regarding a non-compete agreement. Laura resigned last July, citing how she was deceived into accepting the position of senior vice-president when she believed the initial offer was to be creative director. The offer wasn’t clear, however, to Carolina at all. (She basically didn’t know that some of her subordinates wanted to replace her? Uh-oh, major office tension!)
Carolina is insisting on the six-month non-compete agreement stipulated in Laura’s contract with the clothing brand. This means Laura cannot accept the position at Oscar De La Renta until April 2017, a problem since Oscar De La Renta is set to present its first collection with its new creative directors this coming February. Laura is also airing out a few more pieces of dirty laundry: how her spring 2017 collection for Carolina Herrera was heavily revised by Carolina and how the designer told her point blank: “Nobody knows you and nobody knows that you are here. I am more famous than you and have more powerful friends.”
Carolina Herrera, the designer and the company, has yet to directly address the veracity of the quote. It gave an amicable response to how the temporary restraining order stopping Laura from working at Oscar De La Renta has been lifted until January, when the court shall make its final decision on the matter.
