I’m a Nutella lover through and through so I can’t imagine life without it. The hazelnut spread suffered a major setback, however, as its use of palm oil, which is said to cause cancer, came into question. The brand is still sticking by its recipe despite this controversy.
A recent European study titled Chemicals in Food found that palm oil and cancer share a link. This prompted suppliers to pull out Nutella from their shelves and caused mass dismay from consumers. Nutella defended their use of palm oil as it is the reason behind the product’s spreadability and creaminess. It also must be noted that palm oil’s cancerous effects are prevalent when the oil is not processed properly.
Nutella also noted how its palm oil is separated from “conventional palm oil.” Palm oil is also used in many popular food items including PopTarts and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
With that, Nutella will not be changing its current formula and the decision of whether you should give in to the sweet spread is left to consumers’ personal discretion.
What do you think? Will you still be buying Nutella after this issue? Let us know in the comment section below.
