One of the first lessons in fashion I picked up is how to mix high-street pieces with costly items. Style is never about having the latest items or stealing a look straight from the runway, although Anna Dello Russo might argue otherwise—a topic for another article. Style is learning how to mix and match trends with classics, upgrading a simple shirt that’s lived in your closet with something that’s hot off the rack.
It is also learning what clothes suit you the most, what pieces accentuate your assets or flaunts parts of your body that you want to. What part of your body you want to draw attention to is also up to you. We’re not here to tell you what body you should aspire to have.
If you need a concrete example, take a look at the ensembles and pieces Heart Evangelista has pulled off for Paris Fashion Week. The actress is currently in the enviable position of getting a closer look at couture shows of Giambattista Valli and in the atelier of Dolce & Gabbana.
From her chosen outfits to the shows, one can get some clues on how to look good by combining fast-fashion with the latest runway looks. If you’re a little lost how she does it, we’ve cracked the code with these steps.
#1 Trendy accessories never die
It might be a little counterintuitive to invest on trendy pieces but when they do make a statement, they can add a much needed pop to the simplest outfits. Heart tags Dolce & Gabbana oversized sunglasses and an Elsa Schiaparelli clutch as her go-to pieces for the week.
#2 Hi-low is the way to go
See how that Schiaparelli clutch in action with her Mark Bumgarner top and Zara jeans. Break this look down and it’s just that comfortable black and jeans combo. But the details of these are the key: the puffy sleeves of the Bumgarner blouse contrast the ripped Zara jeans. Throw in those Gucci shoes (as shoes can always make or break an outfit) and Heart is front-row ready without trying too hard.
#3 Go from casual to formal real quick
It seems Heart loves her jeans this season. She took another ripped pair, this time from Topshop, to go with her Balmain coat and hand-painted Dolce & Gabbana bag. The coat could pass for a formal setting but given how Heart chose it in a pink color and put it over a black bandeau top makes it look coherent with the jeans. And that’s how you can straddle two dress codes in one. Ready for the morning meet-ups and also for the nighttime cocktails.
#4 Pick your highlight piece
It’s evident that Heart likes classic looks. Just take a peek into this black-and-white combo with her red lip. Not hard to pull off, right? She keeps it fresh with highlight pieces: the graphic print top and the the handpainted bag (which she keeps on using, so see, no need to have a new piece for every ‘gram!)
#5 Take a page from Gucci
Okay, so Heart may be cheating for this one because she is actually wearing a Gucci jacket. However, see how she mixes an athleisure piece with wedges and a white shirt. It seems to take from different aesthetics but it all ties together. How she chose hoop earrings (Told you, trend alert!) and a black bag is just the right way to make sure it all seems effortless.
