The upcoming Darna film is still a mystery to many of us since director Erik Matti is good at keeping secrets with his movies. What we do know is that he promised to take a slightly different approach, possibly making it more action-packed considering his previous films like Buy Bust and On the Job.
Sadly, Erik confirmed that he’s stepping down from the project. According to a statement from ABS-CBN, it was due to “creative differences.” In a post, the director said, “It has been five years and how I wish I could have finished it after all the hard work that went into preparing and putting it together.” He also shared that this was a personal project for him since his first project in the industry was as continuity supervisor for Peque Gallaga’s Darna. “Doing this modern reboot of the classic superhero, I feel that I have come full circle in this industry,” he said.

In a previous interview, Erik said that this Darna movie will be bigger in scale. “Adventure kasi ‘yon. May action ka, may CG ka. Sa Darna, I want to do it right.” (It’s an adventure. You have action and CG in Darna. I want to do it right.)
The director never gave anything specific but we could only assume that we would have action similar to the recent Wonder Woman film. Maybe even Buy Bust if Liza was required to tone up and train for Darna.
Now that Erik Matti’s out of the picture and there’s no new director at the moment, is Darna bound to go in a different direction? Only time will tell. But Erik is confident that Liza will be “a kickass Darna” and he also wishes the director all the best for the project.
