Breakups can be ugly and being friends with your exes isn’t always a good idea. But it doesn’t mean you should wallow in bitterness for your failed relationship—Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson did as much over the weekend.
Ariana surprised everyone with a new single titled “Thank U, Next.” The song is an anthem of self-love where she gave a shoutout to her exes, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez, Mac Miller, and Pete Davidson.
Throughout the song, she sings about being grateful for them for teaching her love, patience, and pain. Meanwhile, this particular line got us big time: “Plus I met someone else / We having better discussions / I know they say I move on too fast / But this one gon’ last / ‘Cause her name is Ari / And I’m so good with that.” Yas, empowerment!
Not-so-coincidently, “Thank U, Next” was released before this week’s Saturday Night Live! aired, so people were waiting for Pete’s reaction. Despite joking about the breakup in separate instances, he took a more serious tone to address the song and the breakup in general. “The last thing I will say is, I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is, it’s nobody’s business,” he said. “And sometimes things just don’t work out and that’s okay. She’s a wonderful, strong person, and I wish her all the happiness in the world.”
Doesn’t it make you feel warm inside knowing that two exes are civil toward each other? To quote Ariana’s tweet, “No drags… No shade… [Just] love, gratitude, acceptance, honesty, forgiveness… and growth.”
