The ‘Captain Marvel’ trailer digs deep on Carol Danvers’ past

Just as its new poster was released, the new trailer for Captain Marvel is also finally here and it. Is. Epic. We still didn’t know much about Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first leading lady from their previous teaser trailer, but this one sheds more in-depth light to the character, and the mythology surrounding her. This trailer is action-packed and full of revelations. Right off the bat, it answered some questions left by the teaser trailer. For instance, it established that that old lady she punched was indeed a Skrull—the villainous shape-shifting creatures who are different from Kree—another alien race—whom Carol Danvers described as “noble warrior heroes.” But things aren’t exactly black and white. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Skrulls may be positioned as the bad guys up front, but with Guardians’ baddies Ronan and Korath on the side of the Kree, and Jude Law’s character looking less than amiable, it wouldn’t be surprising if Carol’s quick assessment of Kree-Skrull politics is somewhat askew.”

It is also important to note that surprisingly, the trailer only briefly touched on supporting characters. While it did show quick glimpses of the Starforce team, the focus was more on Carol Danvers’ past. It was able to establish that she is an air-force pilot abducted by aliens and infused with Kree blood that gives her powers as well as makes her resistant to aging, which, as THR notes, is “handy since Carol will play a key role in Avengers 4, decades after the events of the ’90s set Captain Marvel.”

This suggests that while the trailer’s introduction indicates the movie will draw from the Kree-Skrull War, the main focus of the film will be on Carol discovering her past, just as audiences will discover who this hero who’s destined to defeat Thanos really is.
