Instagram already ruined our chronological timelines and they almost did it again with the “tap-to-advance” feature. Some users got this update and negatively reacted to the fact that the app made their feed horizontal and the scroll function is completely gone. They basically made Stories in a bigger scale.
Shortly after, Instagram retracted this update and said that it was “accidentally” rolled out due to a bug. “We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge.
So, does that mean we won’t get a a horizontal feed in the future? Yea—no. Instagram executive Adam Mosseri tweeted that it was supposed to be “a small test.”
Besides, the app wouldn’t create a feature in the first place if they don’t plan to add it in a future update. Plus, Instagram has done gradual rollouts before that are still here (i.e. the non-chronological feed algorithm) and are gone forever (i.e. screenshot notifications on IG Stories).
But, to be honest, we’re not excited about the tap-to-advance feature. We’re already tapping nonstop on Stories, why should we do it on our feeds? It’s like Tinder with the way its formatted, too. What do you guys think?
