January is breakup month, so here are films to help you get over one

Did you know that January is breakup month? To be honest, it’s the first time I’m hearing about it. But a study found that there are more couple splits in this month than in any other month. Bustle adds that New Year’s Day is particularly the day that it breakups happen because couples may have been holding back during Christmas season. (Though, the holidays reportedly have the second-highest number.)

Overall, people want change in the new year and they feel that breaking up with someone is the best course. Don’t be alarmed if you feel you’re in a loving relationship, though! But breakups happen to everyone and in various forms—it can be romantic, platonic, or even with your job. If you’re going through one, there’s a film out there for you—you can check our list for starters.

Legally Blonde

Watch: When you want to do better with your life after a bad breakup.

Elle Woods is the epitome of a girlboss who changed her life by entering Harvard Law and showing everyone that she’s not a dumb blonde. This is the level of moving on we all want to have, especially if you ex-boyfriend doesn’t value you.

The Holiday

Watch: When you want to take a well-deserved break and get away from people for a while.

This is technically a Christmas movie, but the breakup stories of Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz’s characters make it a great watch at any time. Here, you’ll see two women slowly find themselves again as they take vacations in separate holiday homes. Makes you want to hop on a plane or your car to escape.

Celeste & Jesse Forever

Watch: If you believe in staying friends with your ex/es.

Celeste & Jesse Forever is about a divorcing couple, played by Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg, who try to remain amicable while seeing other people. You’ll later see just how their lives will change as they keep this friendship up.

(500) Days of Summer

Watch: When you’re going through a breakup with a friend, who you don’t know if they’re something more or not.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt—and the movie itself—has made it clear that (500) Days of Summer is not a love story. It’s about a controlling man who obsesses over a woman (Zooey Deschanel) and insists that she’s the one for him, even though they never really agreed on being in an actual relationship. So, technically, they’re close friends who happen to be playing house in Ikea and had shower sex. If you experienced a friendship breakup with someone that made you say “I don’t know what we are,” go watch this.

Begin Again

Watch: When you want to follow your dreams after a breakup.

Some relationships will make you feel like you’re being held back from following your passion and whatever it is you want to do. Once you let that person go, you should do what you want and there’s no looking back. Take notes from Begin Again wherein Greta (Keira Knightley) pursues music after finding out that her ex cheated on her. Dan (Mark Ruffalo), who’s a divorced music producer, helps her achieve this. Aside from music, they also help each other regain their footing after their respective breakups.

How to Be Single

Watch: When you’re not ready for a relationship yet, and that’s okay!

Moving on can be hard and sometimes, people suggest that you get into another relationship to get over the last one. But that’s not always the solution and How to Be Single showcases that as four single women navigate and reflect on their relationships while in New York.
