While we’re still readying ourselves for the upcoming live-action Aladdin and Mulan films, another Disney reboot has already been confirmed: The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The new version will reportedly be a musical which will draw from both the animated movie and the Victor Hugo novel. According to Variety, acclaimed playwright David Henry Hwang will write the script, with Mandeville Films and Josh Gad set to produce. Meanwhile, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will pen the music.
Though it’s still in the early stages, Deadline reports that Josh Gad, who starred in another Disney reboot Beauty and the Beast, might play the lead character, “but insiders at the studio said no casting is solid at this point.”
Personally, I’m excited to know who will play Esmeralda. Hopefully, they won’t whitewash the character. Maybe they’ll hold auditions for her like they did with Mulan?
