The #MeToo movement has reached South Korea, and the women in sports are speaking up. This started when two-time Olympic champion Shim Suk-hee accused her coach of raping her since she was a teenager. After the speed skater came forward, five others said they were also sexually abused by their coaches.
According to Time, “It says the current leadership at the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee should step down for failing to safeguard athletes.” The report also mentioned, “female athletes in judo, taekwondo, and wrestling have also accused their male coaches of sexually abusing them.”
This all seems too familiar. Last year, former US gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was found guilty of sexual abuse. During his hearing, 150 women came forward each with their own story of abuse. He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years for sex crimes.
Something has to be done about this. These men in power shouldn’t be preying on your girls. And Women shouldn’t be in danger of these men when all they want to do is train and play sports.
