Most of us may have already forgotten about Mother’s Day—especially since the messy elections—but in the United States, Canada, and Australia, Mother’s Day had just concluded. To honor this, new mom Meghan Markle posted something special on Instagram: A photo of her cradling the feet of baby Archie in a garden of forget-me-nots. “Paying tribute to all mothers today—past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered,” @Sussexroyal wrote.
Aside from it being her first-ever Mother’s Day, Vogue claims, “the caption suggests—’those lost but forever remembered’—[is] also a tribute to someone else: Princess Diana.” Apart from the literal meaning you could derive from the flower’s name, it takes on a deeper significance because forget-me-nots have often been associated with Princess Diana.
Vogue notes, “On the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, the sunken garden at Kensington Palace was transformed into a memorial garden for the late royal. It was filled with her favorite flowers—which included forget-me-nots.” Moreover, Sean Harkin, head gardener at Kensington Palace, told the magazine, “Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, gave some forget-me-nots to her when they were younger. They stayed with her as one of her favorite flowers, so it was important to include them.”

Prince Harry and Meghan certainly seem like they’ve become fond of forget-me-nots too, since they’ve filled their garden at their new home, Frogmore Cottage, with the sentimental flower—no doubt, a touching tribute to The People’s Princess.
