A body-shamer told Maris Racal she needs to stop working out

Proof that we still live in a society that’s judgmental of one’s body: Maris Racal was told to stop working out because of her body type.

If you follow the singer-actress on IG, then you might’ve seen her post about her workouts. She also talked about how it makes her “feel better and inspired.”

But in a now-deleted tweet, Maris posted a screenshot of a DM she received on Instagram. It was a fan telling her to stop working out because of her petite body and “mas maganda pag may laman” (it looks better when you have fat).

Meanwhile, netizens came to her defense, saying that the “basher” should’ve known that working out isn’t just for losing weight.

This is a classic example of someone who shames others for having a body that doesn’t fit a society’s mold. If you are too thin, you are perceived as sickly. But when you’re showing any amount of tummy rolls, you are perceived as “unhealthy” or “not taking care of yourself.”

Celebrities like Maris are common targets of body-shamers (including the ones who don’t know they’re doing it) because they’re expected to look “perfect.” They are then reduced to their appearance, disregarding their talents and hard work. Whatever Maris chooses to do with her body is none of anyone’s business.

If you feel the need to comment about people’s bodies, regardless if they’re celebrities or not, please keep it to yourself.
