Preen Picks: Life advice from our dads which got us seriously thinking

The influence of fathers—or father figures, whoever that may be in your life—cannot be denied. Beyond giving ~great~ dad jokes, we especially love them for this other reason: they give pretty solid life advice.

So in celebration of Father’s Day, some people from our office shared the most important life advice their dads ever gave them, or one that stuck with them the most. Read on and soak in that dad wisdom:

Be curious, and value your people

Always ask questions, [and] never lie to the important people in your life – Javier Lobregat, photographer

A reminder on chasing your passion

I have always wanted to pursue my dancing career ever since I graduated high school, but given that I was staying in Baguio, pursuing this was pretty much of a struggle due to the lack of opportunities to earn. My father knew that, but that did not stop him from supporting me. Years after, I come up with an opportunity to become a teacher. Upon hearing this, my dad texted me the words, “Anak, just remind them why they started doing what they are doing right now.”  I was a young man with no formal training of teaching, but I believe I would be able to do my job just because my father shared his wisdom with me. – Kyle Cayabyab, senior account executive

The harsh realities of life

Wala akong maalala na solid na advice from my dad but meron isa na kinda harsh. When I was applying for jobs, he told me you can’t get the work that you want talaga. It’s just a part of life. Lol. It stuck with me because it made me look at reality harder but also work harder at the same time – Marian Hukom, graphic designer

The importance of building habits

“Form good habits.” It’s pretty simple, and I think that’s why most people disregard it. But we tend to forget that conquering any project or goal, however big that may be, starts by building habits that reinforce that. Admittedly, I’m still working on this one. – Bea del Rio, junior content creator, Preen.ph

On being independent

“Wag kang umasa sa iba, you live a very privileged life but you need to live your life as independent as you can because we’re humans and we won’t be there to live forever to support you all the way through.” This motivated me ever since I was in high school, coming from the province, I took it as a core motivation to hustle and be self-sufficient here in Manila to reach my goals and aspirations.” – JP Talapian, photographer
