A feminist bookstore is in the works and it needs your help

Gantala Press recently announced on Instagram plans of starting a feminist bookstore at Cubao, Quezon City.

With GoGetFunding, Gantala Press has started a fundraiser and aims to raise P500,000 to open the said bookstore.

They’re also asking for woman carpenter volunteers to help them build the store’s bookshelves.

Gantala Press is an independent non-profit Filipina feminist press run entirely by volunteers. They produce publications and hold workshops and press fairs that focus on women’s stories and issues.

The bookstore will serve as a resource center for women in the Philippines which includes an archive of works from Gandang-ganda sa Sariling Gawa! (an annual all-women art fair organized by the press that showcases female creators’ works, from books to comics).

The press plans for the bookstore to be a space for more workshops, forums and exhibitions that cater to oppressed, marginalized and discriminated women.

This is another win for representation—giving more safe spaces for women to share their stories and raise awareness on the realities of abuse, harrassment and discrimination against women. It also encourages direct participation rather than mediation—letting these women speak for themselves rather than speaking on their behalf.

Want to show your support? You can send in donations through their GoGetFunding listing.
