When you think about Anthony Bourdain, a man who willingly travels the world to eat any and almost all kind of foreign and odd cuisine, you immediately think that the guy is fearless.
But he reveals via the List app that he’s in fact scared of a couple of unlikely things. And despite being one to eat whatever a country’s native and exotic cuisine might offer, Anthony fears Nashville Hot Chicken. He also prefers to stay away from The Real Housewives of Anywhere, polka music, ukuleles, neck beards with banjos, golf clothes (and even golfers in general, and pressure cookers.
His top five fears are as follows:
#1 Clowns: Anthony characterized them as non-funny “sinister figures,” laden with homicidal tendencies. He was pretty sure he’s not the first to think this, too.
#2 Mimes: “Like cats, when entering a space, they gravitate towards the one person who fears them,” Anthony writes. He said they’re “pure evil” and out to embarrass those who are shy, troubled, or, yes, hungover.
#3 Switzerland: This neutral country is quite a foe for the world-traveling chef, who writes that he lives “with a persistent dread of alpine vistas, chalet architecture, Tyrolean hats, and even cheese with holes in it.” No Swiss cheese for Anthony, then.
#4 Karaoke: Don’t ask Anthony to sing in public, please. “Like anything shameful, I prefer to do it in private,” he says. But, Korean karaoke is an exception.
#5 Rats: Anthony may eat snakes and take on spiders, but place him near a rat and that will be the final straw. “Maybe it’s my years in the restaurant business, but the appearance of a rat was always the beginning of the end,” he writes.
Good thing he didn’t pass by a karaoke sidewalk party when he took a trip to the Philippines.
