Women running in 2020: A sign the Trump admin failed minorities

By Jacqueline Ariason January 17, 2019

It’s almost three years into Donald Trump’s presidency. Can you believe it? People in the US and even other countries can’t either. As Stephen Colbert said in his The Late Show monologue, “We all thought it was a joke. Then election night came around.” This administration has been filled from controversy starting from Trump’s sexual assault admission, wanting to build a wall to keep out immigrants, and cutting healthcare funds—that’s just the tip of the iceberg, too.

If his various speeches were to be believed, Trump declared that he’s running again in 2020 with the goal to “Keep America Great.” That is if he doesn’t get indicted over Russian collusion before 2019 ends—but even then, his second-in-command Mike Pence, who reportedly doesn’t have a good track record either, will take the position.

It’s no surprise, then, that there are four women from the Democratic party who are expected to run in 2020. They are Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Kamala Harris, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Warren and Harris both haven’t officially confirmed their bids, but they are taking steps to consider and make a final decision as soon as possible.

We know this isn’t the first time a woman has run for US president. (Here’s a list of all of them.) But with minorities feeling the adverse effects of Trump’s administration, it’s only fitting that these ladies are taking the lead. And with the groundbreaking wins during the US midterm elections, more candidates with diverse backgrounds might also run.

Trump has said demeaning things against women, especially those who criticize him. His cuts on healthcare has greatly affected women in the US as well. He’s also been accused by citizens and government officials of being a white supremacist in several occasions.

Of course, it’s still a case of looking at each possible candidates’ backgrounds and qualifications. If the goal is to take down Trump and try to undo what he’s done since 2016 for the benefit of everyone in the country, one should pick carefully once the campaign rallies start.
