Did the ‘Black Widow’ trailer just show who will replace Natasha Romanoff?

The “Black Widow” trailer is finally out and there’s already a hint on who the next Black Widow will be.

(If you haven’t seen “Avengers: Endgame,” we suggest you look away right now because there are going to be spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.)

The last time we saw Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), she threw herself off Vormir’s cliff to save Ronin and get the Soul Stone in “Avengers: Endgame.” It was a sad and noble death—one that sparked multiple arguments on why Black Widow was never given a proper funeral in the end.

Now, we’re seeing her again in her first—and long overdue—solo film. Contrary to previous theories that this is going to be an origin story, the trailer shows Black Widow’s memories with some of the members of Avengers. This means that the film takes place in between some of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film also introduces new characters like Red Guardian (David Harbour) and two other Black Widows (Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz). There are also theories that Pugh will be playing Yelena Belova, a younger spy who also trained in the Red Room in Moscow. In the comics, Belova is portrayed as one of Romanoff’s rivals, but they seem to act like sisters in the trailer.

Whoever Belova will be, there are theories that she will take on Romanoff’s Black Widow mantle in the upcoming MCU films. It makes sense considering that there have been several changes in the new generation of Avengers—Sam Wilson is now Captain America, Hawkeye will be training Kate Bishop, and Spider-Man is being molded as the new Iron Man-like leader.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch it below and let us know if you agree with this theory:

“Black Widow” will premiere on May 1, 2020. Mark your calendars now!
