This just in: MJ Rodriguez of “Pose” and “Little Shop of Horrors” fame is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar wearing a Francis Libiran gown.
Just last year, Filipino fashion designer Libiran held a show to commemorate his 20th year in the fashion industry. He is widely recognized for his gowns and bridal wear, with many brides-to-be pinning his designs on their mood boards. He’s also dressed our favorite model-turned-reality show host Tyra Banks.
In her caption, Rodriguez says she’s “shedding awareness while being fashionable,” pairing the Libiran dress with a faux fur coat. Rodriguez says she is channeling the Netflix original film “Hollywood” and “envisioning what the future could look like.”
Rodriguez is not the first trans woman to get the Harper’s Bazaar cover treatment. Back in 2016, its Indian edition featured Fil-Am model Geena Rocero and Tracey Norman (the landmark trans woman model who became the face of Clairol and Avon in the 70s).
Just like her “Pose” co-stars, Rodriguez is breaking barriers. Being part of the show which features the largest cast with recurring trans actors, her co-star Indya Moore and the show’s director and writer Janet Mock have also been waving the trans flag in their respective fields. Moore is the first trans model for Elle, while Mock is the first POC trans woman to direct a major TV show and first openly trans woman to sign a major deal with Netflix.
