SZA’s finally back, b*tches.
Three years after the release of her critically acclaimed breakthrough album “Ctrl,” Solána is out with a new hit on her hands—the new single “Hit Different” with Ty Dolla $ign.
The song, which debuted along with a music video, is a characteristically moody and introspective tune where SZA bares her messy feelings. This time, she’s singing about her insecurities and loneliness in an open relationship, similar to what she explored in “The Weekend.”
“Hit different when I’m sittin’ here / Alone, all by myself (Alone, all by myself) / Hit different when I think you might be / With somebody else,” the song goes. (Ouch!!!!)
The music video is also a first for SZA, since it’s the first one she directed herself. In it, you see her doing, among other things, doing choreo (!!!) with her backup dancers, lounging in an orange bikini on top of a pickup, and sensually writhing in a stable while covered in red paint. It’s certainly a different look for the singer who usually does more subdued videos, but it’s hitting me good.
The R&B singer has been hinting at her new comeback since earlier this year, going on a Rolling Stones feature in February where she gave hints about the new music she was making. However, the release still took many by surprise because she suggested in August that her label was purposefully delaying her album in a now-deleted series of tweets.
Watch out: Aside from the Ty Dolla $ign collab, there will be more collaborations in the pipeline, with SZA promising collabs with Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Kehlani and Jhené Aiko.
