I’m ready to yearn with BL series ‘Gaya sa Pelikula’

The long wait is over. The BL series that Juan Miguel Severo promised us would actually cast queer actors for the lead roles is about to arrive. On Sept. 25, “Gaya Sa Pelikula” will premiere on Globe Studios’ YouTube channel and we’ll finally get to meet newcomers Paolo Pangilinan and Ian Pangilinan as housemates-turned-couple Karl and Vlad. We’re ready to eat up this domestic rom-com.

It’s Globe Studios’ first narrative digital series and they’re determined to bring something new to the table. “Gaya Sa Pelikula” is described as “a love letter for and from the community in how it freely presents queer love, all its feelings, and all its possibilities that can lead to a most-deserved happy ending. Without exoticizing queer love, the story is presented in the most normal way possible.” On the series’ official poster, the words “It’s time to take back our story” are proudly written.

Written and created by Severo, we’re getting eight 20-minute episodes on a narrative that serves as a prequel to his unproduced teleplays published on Wattpad. With director JP Habac (“I’m Drunk, I Love You”) at the helm, we’re excited to laugh and cry along with introverted architecture student Karl and his schoolmate Vlad as they learn more about each other and about themselves over a semestral break.

It looks like we’re getting a new weekly habit with the episodes dropping every Friday at 8 pm from Sept. 25 to Nov. 13. The series was also chosen to be part of YouTube’s Super Stream line-up. Super Stream is a YouTube effort that gives Filipino viewers access to their partners’ content for free for a limited time.

Pumped for the show? You can watch its trailer to find out why fans are already raving about Paolo and Ian’s chemistry.
