Here’s a little news to brighten up your Monday, Alex Eala is the first Filipina to reach the semi-finals in the French Open, and we’re in love.
In case you’re not too well-versed in the tennis world (because same, sis), the 2020 French Open (Championnats Internationaux de France de Tennis) is an international tennis tournament that’s one of the sport’s four Grand Slams. The 2020 tournament that opened last Sept. 27 is one to remember as Eala made history as the first Filipina to make it this far into a major Grand Slam event—powering her way into the semi-finals of the Juniors category last Thursday.
Eala was among the youngest in the group at 15 (yes, we were shocked too) and the only Asian in the last four semi-finalists in the girls division. With the pandemic still looming, her family was not able to watch her live, but gave their full support virtually along with many Filipino fans. Eala’s father noted, “[I’m] surprised with the number of Filipinos coming out on all media to support her.”
Eala dedicates her achievement to everyone who needs a win, especially in the troubling times amidst the pandemic. She shared, “I’m sharing this win with all of you, especially those who need personal wins in your life. “
