In the era of remakes and spin-offs, will Hulu’s “How I Met Your Father” be deemed a welcome reimagining or an unnecessary dredging up of the past?
When the “Lizzie McGuire” reboot got canceled, a lot of Hilary Duff fans were crushed. But now, she’s set to star in a new sitcom where she’s the (possibly more likable) counterpart to Ted Mosby from “How I Met Your Mother.” Will the people who enjoy rewatching “HIMYM” episodes tune in?
“How I Met Your Father” follows Sophie in a near future where she tells her son the story of how she met his father. Sophie’s story brings us back to the year 2022 when she and her close-knit group of friends are “in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.” Duff plays 2022 Sophie, while Kim Cattrall narrates as older Sophie. The 10-episode series is set to premiere on January 18, 2022.
The original cast left some big shoes to fill. So what’s the new gang like? Duff’s Sophie seems dead set on finding The One if this line from the trailer is anything to go by: “I know this might sound crazy, but I’ve been on 87 Tinder dates this year.” Oof. Francia Raisa (“Grown-ish”) plays Sophie’s adventurous roommate Valentina who works as a stylist. Tom Ainsley (“The Royals”) plays Valentina’s old-money model boyfriend Charlie. Chris Lowell (“Veronica Mars”) plays Uber driver and aspiring musician Jesse. Suraj Sharma’s (“Life of Pi”) bar owner Sid is also roommates with Jesse. And last but not least is Tien Tran (“Space Force”) as Jesse’s adopted sister, Ellen, who’s moved to New York after calling it quits with her wife. Asian lesbian representation? Our interest has been piqued. Josh Peck of “Drake and Josh” fame will also be appearing on the show.

“HIMYM” creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays are back to help showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. (Fun fact, Aptaker and Berger are also at the helm of the “Love, Simon” spin-off “Love, Victor.”) The show does look a bit old-school since it was shot on a soundstage. Remember those? But don’t let that distract from the fact that the story is largely set in 2022. We’re curious to know if the pandemic will get mentioned and what dating insights we’ll be getting from the show. Are you…waiting for it?
