Which Sam Smith Song Best Describes Your Relationship?

Sam Smith

We all have to thank Sam Smith.

He was ready to comfort our love-stricken souls when Adele was probably busy nursing either baby Angelo or her personal heartaches. Sam came into our lives with a slew of songs, peppered with cheesy lines sang in that rich baritone. His falsetto brought us to our beds to cry over ex-lovers, cheating partners, and has-beens. Thank you, Sam, for giving our (non-existent) love lives the soundtrack it needed.

Now, we can all show gratitude in his concert. This Saturday, Nov. 21, the Grammy Award-winning singer is more than ready to conquer the Manila stage at the Mall of Asia Arena—but are you?

Pick the Sam Smith song that suits your current relationship status, and make sure to sing your heart out when it comes on.

For those in waiting: “Life Support”

For those who just confessed to their long-time crushes and are still waiting on their answers, play this then wrap yourself in a thick, fleece blanket. God knows how much you’d prefer to be a lifeless burrito as you sing “I’m just hanging on your answer,/ I built this bed for me and you.” The irony!

For lovers in their honeymoon stage: “Latch”

You think he’s the one after like, what, two chill dates without Netflix? Gurl, calm down. Your feelings are as overwhelming as Sam’s rosy “Latch.” Packed with charged lines such as “Now I’ve got you in my space,/ I won’t let go of you/ Got you shackled in my embrace,” the song is a flirty shout-out to a newly minted lover and those who believe in forever.

For those who harbor unrequited love: “Not in That Way”

Sam—and most likely you—have a lot of love to give, not even caring if that someone loves you in a different way. “Not in That Way” is a tune for those in the friend zone. You selfless romantics need to hold onto that Kleenex as Sam sings, “I’d never ask you ‘cause deep down I’m certain what you’d say/ You’d say, ‘I’m sorry, believe me, I love you but not in that way.’” Ouch.

For those who admit to being clingy: “Lay Me Down”

This solemn song is the soundtrack of stalkers. “Lay Me Down” starts in an almost chant-like manner—sing “Yes, I do, I believe/ That one day I will be/ Where I was right there/ Right next you” real quick—like a lyrical hex you cast to an unknowing lover. You ask him or her how you’re going to live without them when in fact, you should know how to deal with it yourself. We’re all adults here, aren’t we?

For those who want to begin anew: “Restart”

This cheerful track is a welcome break from the overall sentimentality of his album In the Lonely Hour. But it fits: When you decide to just walk away from all this pain and love-related mess, all you want to do is “Restart” and realize that you’re “better on your own.” (Insert your sassiest hair flip here.)

For those with cheating partners: “I’m Not the Only One”

Strong partners like you deserve your own song. Try serenading this—or maybe just drop it on Spotify if you can’t sing—to your partner and let him know that you know. For added effect, burn his clothes while you do it, while sporting that Dianna Agron bob to make him regret.

For the third parties: “Leave Your Lover”

No, you weren’t forgotten. While the love you have is secondhand, it might just mean that you’re loved better by your man. It’s time to claim your territory. Let your unofficial beau know that you want to really be his because you “will give all of [yourself.]”  Tell him to dump his lover with the same way Sam crinkles his eyes in the video, like a puppy you just can’t leave.
