What Is the ‘Ugly-Pretty’ Shoe and Why Is it Trending?

Spring ’17 runways saw the resurgence of “ugly-pretty” shoes. From Christopher Kane’s Crocs to Dolce & Gabbana’s flatforms, it’s like a throwback of the shoes you’d like to forget. But one shoe is still considered a practical staple today: Birkenstock sandals.

Last June, the shoe brand staged their first show at Paris Fashion Week, making it clear that they’re going to be trendy again. Likewise, celebrities like Naomi Watts and Miranda Kerr were recently spotted wearing Birks. Instagram’s Eva Chen also swears by her plain white ones.

Birkenstocks are known for its sturdy and comfortable wear with leather straps. Fashion labels like Givenchy and Céline, among many others, have also made their own spin on them. So get on the ugly-pretty sandal trend too with these Birks alternatives.

Roger Vivier Slidy ‘Viv’ Strass Buckle Sandals

This pair is a favorite of Brie Larson and Elle Fanning. The straps are made from silk satin with crystal-embellished buckles. You can pair this with your jeans and wide-leg pants while doing your errands. Available online.

Melissa Cosmic

A sleek rubber sandal is what you need during rainy days. Opt for the Melissa Cosmic and choose from its wide range of colors from brown to turquoise. Available at Glorietta 3.

Sacai Shearling Trim Sandals

The gold metallic strap and fur lining makes it a good statement piece. Wear them with casual and dressy pieces. Available on Farfetch.

Sophia Webster Becky Crystal-Embellished Leather Sandals

If you want something similar to the plain white Birks that Eva Chen and the Olsen twins love, cop this Sophia Webster pair. It also has pastel-colored crystals on the straps for a feminine touch. Just make sure to spray a shoe protector to keep it clean. Available on Net-a-Porter.

Charles & Keith Nude Furry Double Strap Mules

Add comfort to your step with these fur-lined sandals. It’s also in a nude shade so you can pair it with any ensemble. Available at SM Megamall.
