Kate Middleton Wears Princess Diana’s Favorite Tiara and People Get the Chills

Recently, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was spotted at the Queen’s winter party wearing the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara. The royal accessory was a favorite of Princess Diana, who wore it several times throughout her reign. You can guess how several publications went into a frenzy pointing out how Kate seems to have the same love for the tiara as her late mother-in-law.

Commissioned by Queen Mary, the tiara is made with diamonds and pearls hanging from its 19 arches. The Cambridge Lover’s Knot was passed on to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The reigning monarch wore it a few times in the ’50s until she narrowed down her favorite tiaras. The Cambridge Lover’s Knot did not make that cut and was placed into storage.

In 1981, the Queen gave the tiara to Princess Diana. Upon the divorce of the Princess from Prince Charles, the tiara was returned back into storage. Last year, Kate decided to wear the tiara for the same event. In July of this year, Kate was spotted wearing it again at a state dinner with Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

According to The Court Jeweller, there is a bit of discrepancy with how the public identifies the tiara and its real name. The Cambridge Lover’s Knot is reportedly a crown that was owned by a German nobility from which Queen Mary took the inspiration for her own version. The formal name of this tiara is Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot.
