What’s the Big Deal About Jennifer Lawrence’s Revealing Gown Controversy?

By Tisha Ramirezon February 22, 2018

Why can’t society just let women wear what they want? That’s the question I asked myself when I heard about Jennifer Lawrence’s latest “scandal.” She was recently in London promoting her new film Red Sparrow and while the men wore sweaters and coats, Jennifer wore a black Versace dress. A dress that the Internet found too revealing.

This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image. Not least because I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody FREEZING. pic.twitter.com/BRnmgKJ5wY

Some netizens questioned her fashion choice and even asked Versace why they didn’t dress her in one of their suits instead.

I’ve seen your beautiful suits and coats. Why don’t you respect Ms Lawrence enough to dress her appropriately for the weather? Sexism is alive and well.

Jennifer was appalled by people’s reactions that she posted a response on Facebook. She stated that the dress was too beautiful to cover up, “That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and scarf.” Note: She was only outside for five minutes to take photos. She also found the issue sexist and against feminist ways, “[Overreacting] about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward.”

Preach, Jennifer! Go ahead and wear what you want, we think you looked stunning in that dress.
