There’s something about backhanded compliments that makes my blood boil. At first, you appreciate the good part and are then blindsided by an insult. The thing about these comments is that they aren’t even compliments at all, they’re just disguised as such. I mean, why do people feel the need to follow up with a negative statement? Can’t you just say something good and leave it at that?
For women, I’m sure many of us have gotten these backhanded compliments from men. It could have been from male friends or complete strangers who just couldn’t take a hint. Either, way these need to stop. If you’re not sure if you’ve been saying these to women, here’s a short list followed by how we probably want to react.
You look different on Instagram
You have a great personality, why don’t you have a boyfriend yet?
You look so cute with [makeup on, curly hair, etc.]
It’s cool you’re so focused on your career
You’re fun when you’re drunk
I love that you don’t care what people think
You’re pretty for a [insert adjective] girl
