Missy Elliott is confirmed to be inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, making her the first female rapper ever to receive the honor.
SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers commented, “The 2019 slate of inductees represents diversity and unity across genres and gender, highlighting our dedicated mission to honor music creators who have enriched our lives.” He added, “These are writers who in their time literally transformed music and helped make what’s happening today possible.”
True enough, the rapper, songwriter, and producer’s works, which earned Grammys, multi-platinum certifications, and more than 30 million record sales, was “pivotal in defining the sound of 2000’s era hip-hop and R&B,” Refinery29 noted. “She’s constantly pushing the genre forward, centering themes of feminism, self-love, and sex positivity in her music in a way that is rarely heard in rap, and even less so from a woman.”
Missy is only the second rapper to earn the prestigious title. The first was Jay-Z, in 2017.
Along with other singer-songwriters, she is set to receive her official induction on June 13, during the organization’s 50th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in New York city.
