It’s 2019, and women’s bodies are still used as tools for shame or control. Bella Thorne is not here for it.
After a hacker threatened to release nude photos of her, the actress took matters into her own hands by tweeting the nude photos herself.
“For the last 24 hours, I have been threatened with my own nudes,” Bella revealed. “I feel gross, I feel watched, I feel someone has taken something from me that I only wanted one special person to see,” she said. The photos she released on Twitter over the weekend were in the form of screenshots of a text conversation with the alleged hacker. “F*ck [you] and the power [you] think you have over me. I’m gonna write about this in my next book,” she wrote. “I’m putting this out because it’s MY DECISION NOW [YOU] DON’T GET TO TAKE ANOTHER THING FROM ME. I can sleep tonight better knowing I took my power back. [You] can’t control my life, [you] never will.”
Refinery29 notes, “[Bella] is often candid about her private life, especially her fight for personal and bodily autonomy. The Famous In Love star has opened up about her experiences with bullying and body image, online harassment, and growing up as a child star in Hollywood. Inspired by the #TimesUp movement, [Bella] has also revealed details about her own experience of sexual assault as a young teenager and how the trauma resonated for years after.”
“For too long I let a man take advantage of me over and over and I’m f*cking sick of it,” Bella wrote over this hacking incident.
We think it’s great that she was able to take her power back her own way. Still, she deserves justice and this hacker needs to be apprehended SOON, especially because Bella revealed the hacker also sent her several nude photos of other celebrities, which leads her to believe she would not be their last victim. It would seem she already contacted authorities since she said the hacker should keep an eye out for the FBI, as agents would be at their house “shortly.”
This is certainly upsetting, and we admire Bella’s tenacity to take on her harasser. We’ll keep you posted for any updates on this story.
