After the lipstick disaster of Jaclyn Cosmetics, beauty junkies are now accusing Jeffree Star Cosmetics of allegedly selling expired products via its Mystery Boxes. Not exactly the news you’d like to hear on National Lipstick Day.
The brand, which is owned by beauty vlogger and entrepreneur Jeffree Star, sent out its latest Mystery Box to customer which contains makeup from previous launches and JSC merch. This year, the premium-tier box mostly has lip products from collections like Alien and Jawbreaker. Other products include a Liquid Frost highlighter and a pop socket for your phone.
When customers received their boxes last week, some netizens posted photos of Lip Ammunitions which allegedly have hair, mold, and “green droplets” on them—the same complaints that Jaclyn Cosmetics received last month.
@JeffreeStar a bunch of women are posting pictures of their mystery box lip ammunition’s saying they’re “moldy”, have “green droplets” coming off of them, are expired, hairy, etc. Please enlighten them so they stop talking about how “gross” your lipsticks are pic.twitter.com/HGjJFieiAm

One netizen also shared how the lipsticks smelled expired (“reeks of clay”) and had droplets on it. She also shared an email from Jeffree Star Cosmetics’ customer service where they offered to replace the alleged expired lipstick. They also explained that the droplets may be caused by “the drastic change in climate.”

There is also a Twitter account called @JeffreeStarMBox which retweets all the complaints from the JSC Mystery Boxes since Dec. 2018. (Yup, this issue has been around for a while.)
Of course, the drama and commentary channels on YouTube jumped on the news and said Jeffree “pulled a Jaclyn Hill.” Nick Snider of The Viewers Voice reported that some customers felt like JSC just puts the least popular lipsticks in the Mystery Box. He added that these products were allegedly sold beyond their expiration dates as well.
On the other hand, Angelika Oles theorized in her commentary video that some customers might be exaggerating given what happened with Jaclyn Cosmetics.
It’s important to note that this isn’t the first time Jeffree Star Cosmetics came under fire for faulty makeup. In 2017, the brand was accused of selling moldy Velour Liquid Lipsticks and a highlighter that had a hair in it.
As of writing, Jeffree Star hasn’t spoken out about the Mystery Box controversy, and he should since this is could be a health risk if left unchecked. If you’ve ever received faulty makeup from any brand, be sure to always contact their customer service and ask for a replacement. Don’t just expose them on social media.
