Can We Have These Movie Dogs in Real Life?

Today, we’re celebrating the Lunar New Year. Tell us, how many pieces of tikoy did you eat throughout the day? We hope you saved some space in your tummy for Peking duck at your family dinner.

Now enough of the food talk, let’s focus on dogs and how reliable they are—it’s the Year of the Dog after all. We previously talked about how they can teach us about interacting with other people. Likewise, we also looked back on films that feature dogs and thought about how they’d be great companions in various situations.

Regardless if you own a dog or just love them, you can probably relate with the movie dogs we listed below. Feel free to also binge-watch them after the festivities.

Makes sure you get to work and home safe: Hachiko

Both the Japanese and American films showed Hachiko the dog’s devotion to his owner. He would accompany him to the train station going to work and wait for him until he gets back. He’s friendly with everyone around him too, which is why he got free treats at the station. (Not going to spoil anything but this movie’s going to make you cry big-time.)

Helps with the kids: Beethoven

Who doesn’t want their own Beethoven? The gentle Saint Bernard can take care of the Newton children, and also adapted to the mishaps happening at home. Plus, big dogs like him also double as a warm pillow—just look at Sarah Lahbati cuddling with their own Saint Bernard.

The bundle of energy: Marley

In Marley & Me, Marley the Labrador grows up to be a mischievous dog that messes up the house and fails obedience school. It’s quite a handful to own a dog like this, but even the Grogan family still loved him. Marley even inspired John (played by Owen Wilson) to write op-eds about him.

The travel companion: Toto

Whether it’s in Kansas or Oz, Dorothy and her Yorkie, Toto are inseparable. It’s almost amazing to see how brave this small dog is against the magical beings in Oz. He also stuck around until Dorothy found the Wizard at the end. Who wouldn’t want a travel buddy like that, right? (Yorkshire terriers are easy to carry too!)

Annoying but funny friend: Doug

It was hard to narrow down a favorite Disney canine because there are A LOT. But when it comes to making anyone laugh, Doug from Up takes the award. Just imagine having a talking dog and actually hearing his silly, squirrel-chasing thoughts. His constant talking may be annoying at times but at least the their trip through the jungle wasn’t boring, right?
