Barrettes are back again, but they’re not the same as before

After raving about the return of bobby pins, one hair accessory that was big last year seems to be creeping back. Yup, barrettes seem to be big again, but they got a shiny makeover via rhinestones and sometimes pearls.

These bejeweled clips are being worn to death by Instagram influencers according to Elle. Plus, this trend may or may not be brought back by Selena Gomez after she wore that “UGLY” clip to throw shade at Stefano Gabbana (savage). Another celebrity who was rocking a text clip was Sue Ramirez, who wore a “ROCK & ROLL” barrette during a TV guesting.

Fortunately, these barrettes can be worn even for non-formal events and you just want something sparkly aside from your earrings. For starters, you can check out our quick shopping list below.

Parfois Leaf Hair Clip

First is something low-key courtesy of Parfois. This barrette is leaf-shaped and has a single crystal at the end of the stem. It comes in gold and silver, which is shimmer for any hairstyle. Available at SM Megamall.

Ashley Williams Transparent ‘Boys’ Hair Clips

If wearing an “UGLY” clip isn’t your thing, you might like this one that says “BOYS.” You can wear one with a ponytail or you can wear both, placing them on either side of your hair. We also suggest you play Charli XCX’s “Boys” in the background while you clip these on. Available on SSENSE.

Forever 21 Rhinestone Barrette Hair Clip

This Forever 21 clip reminds me of the ones I wore as a kid with my Sunday dress. Use this rhinestone-encrusted barrette to keep your full bangs away from your face. You can also lend this to your nieces or daughters, just make sure they don’t put this in their mouths to avoid choking on the stones. Available at SM Makati.

Lelet NY Gold-Plated Faux Pearl Hairclip

As mentioned earlier, bejeweled barrettes can also be encrusted with pearls—in this case, faux pearls. This Lelet NY clip seems like the perfect accessory for weddings, be it the bride, bridesmaids, or even just as a guest. Available on Net-a-Porter.

Evita Peroni Malvina Hair Clip

Add some color to your hairstyle with this warm-toned Evita Peroni clip. The stones’ hue reminds us of a sunset, plus it seems fitting to wear during summer parties. Available online.
