Our relationships with our moms are all different. You can be act like sisters because of your close age gap, or fight all the time during your angsty teenage years. You might even have a single mom who took on the work of two parents.
Moms aren’t always perfect—they’re not like the overly-polished Stepford Wives. A great way to remind you of that this Mother’s Day (and the succeeding days of 2019) is to watch films depicting various mother-daughter relationships. You can watch one that relates to you the most, or just watch all of them. Check out our picks below.
Lady Bird
This is for: The former rebellious teenagers and the moms who had to deal with it
Lady Bird is a coming-of-age film about a 17-year-old (Saoirse Ronan) who basically does stupid sh*t like out of insecurity. Meanwhile, her mom is described as “complicated” in expressing her love for her daughter, especially in this rebellious stage.

Freaky Friday
This is for: The moms and daughters who don’t have common interests
If you’re looking for a nostalgic comedy film, Freaky Friday is always a good go-to. It’s a mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) and daughter (Lindsay Lohan) who are always at odds because they don’t understand each other’s passion and work. They later wake up in each other’s bodies after a magical switch, and have to live as normally as possible (and make changes for the sake of the other person). It’s just fun to see how they start to appreciate each other’s interests before getting switched back.
Mamma Mia
This is for: The moms who have funny stories and helpful advice about boys
Well, Meryl Streep’s character in Mamma Mia may be worrying about the three men she had flings with. But it’s also a reminder that our moms were young adults once who probably did the same things as you now during the summer. They probably also have the best advice about men based on their personal experiences. Let’s just hope you don’t have three potential dads like Amanda Seyfried.

Brave
This is for: The moms who don’t let their daughters follow their dreams,but later realize they’re wrong
What we love about Brave is Merida taking control of her narrative and putting her foot down on arranged marriages. Although her family, including her mom, doesn’t understand her decision to not follow tradition, it takes a positive turn at the end. Our sugestion: Just talk to your mom and don’t turn her into a bear.
My Sister’s Keeper
This is for: The moms who’d do anything for their children
This is a heart-wrenching film about a mom (Cameron Diaz) who’s fighting to keep her ill eldest daughter alive. It gets even more emotional when her younger daughter (Abigail Breslin), who’s conceived as a marrow donor for her sister, sues her parents for medical emancipation. But even then, you’ll see the dynamic of these three, and how the mom is still determined to protect her family.
Homecoming
This is for: The hardworking mommas who like to bring their daughters to work
Yes, we are putting Beyoncé’s Coachella documentary here because it’s the epitome of “mom hustling for her passion.” It’s centered on how Bey bounced back after her second pregnancy so she can be 100 percent in time for Beychella. You could see just how devoted she is to her kids, and taking care of them when she’s done with rehearsals. She even brings Blue Ivy to work so she can watch her mom perform.
