Preen Picks: Come rainy season, you’ll find us indoors, watching these movies

Rainy days can be a hassle. Wet pavements, grim skies, and muddied shoes are enough to make some people hate them. But the rainy season has its charms too. I personally love it. As an introvert, I especially love rainy days spent chillin’ indoors. What I usually do is watch great movies.

Since PAGASA announced the start of the rainy season (though it might not feel like it), we asked around our office for rainy day movie recommendations. Keep these in mind once the rain starts to pour and you’re stuck at home.

Crying Ladies

You’ll probably only like it if you’re also a fan of the very specific niche genre of middle-aged veteran actresses having the time of their lives over a silly script, but I vote Crying Ladies starring Sharon Cuneta, Angel Aquino, and Hilda Koronel. In my opinion, rainy days are best spent watching lighthearted movies with a gooey, emotional center, and this movie is the epitome of that. Crying Ladies is inherently absurd: It’s about women paid to cry at funerals!!! Sharon Cuneta is a second-generation crier!!! Hilda Koronel plays a woman who still tear-jerkingly recalls her past as an actress (her biggest role was a villager crushed by a giant)!!!

It’s the kind of stuff that would’ve absolutely become melodramatic and hokey, but the sheer weight of its cast (and what a cast!) manages to pull off the emotional beats and make this wonderfully weird, painfully sweet, gently lighthearted movie the way it is. Turn it on when the only thing louder than the drumming in your heart is the heavy beat of rain. – Zofiya Acosta, content creator, Nolisoli.ph, Northern Living, Southern Living

Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)

It’s the perfect mixture of sunshine care of GREAT visuals and rain care of emotions. As the raindrops fall, so will your tears – Ida Siasoco, intern, Preen.ph

Moulin Rouge

I like being all up in my feelings on a rainy day, and watching Moulin Rouge still makes me cry every time. I also like that it’s a musical because the rain drowns out my loud sing-along rendition of each number. Perfect, right? – Giselle Barrientos,  junior content creator, Scout

Our Times

My go-to rainy day flick is Taiwanese film Our Times (2015). It follows the story of two high school students Lin Zhen-xin and Hsu Tai-yu as they team up to make their crushes break up and fall in love with them instead. I know it sounds like the usual young love romance plot, given the typical gangster character of Tai-yu and Zhen-in’s ordinary school girl personality, but it actually drives you into a new world of growing up with its refreshing storytelling elements. It has no dull moment, and every action of the characters is justified. Before the theme song even plays, you’re already bawling your eyes out for sure. – Jelou Galang, junior content creator, Scout

Submarine

I’d take any excuse to watch this. Some people think it’s sad and I do agree, but also, I really enjoy how quirky the whole film is. I love Richard Ayoade’s humor. And Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige were phenomenal. The soundtrack is great for rainy days too. – Bea del Rio, junior content creator, Preen.ph
