SONA 2019 fashion: From modern ‘barongs’ to statement accessories

Ah, the State of the Nation Address. It’s that important time of the year, where we, citizens, are on the lookout for important updates from our President about just how deep into sh*t we are as a nation (though let’s face it, we are mostly given flowery lies.) Everyone seems to be on their best appearance… not just through their statements and actions, but in the most literal sense of it too. Let’s be real: The SONA has also become a red carpet event of sorts. As we officially welcome the 18th Congress of the Philippines, let’s look at these fashion moments, shall we?

The senator opted for Michael Leyva outfit this year. She was seen wearing black trousers with an embellished detail at the waist featuring local traditional pattern. She paired it with a white blouse with puffy sleeves and a pearl necklace.

She later changed to a pink gown still with local traditional patterns, and a matching pink bolero.

What do you get if you mix the barong and terno? Designer Joel Acebuche showed us with his creation worn by Sen. Risa, which used textile woven in Kalibo and embroidered in Lumban.

This year, Sen. Nancy opted for the classic route with a cream Filipiniana with traditional patterns and embellishments, designed by Randy Ortiz.

We have yet to see the Gabriela Rep., but she did give us a sneak peek of her outfit: A black dress and a statement accessory by comic artist Dead Balagtas. Per Gabriela’s Twitter account, the custom hand fan aims to “to highlight the curse of water privatization.”

Yanne catches our attention yet again with her fashion choices at the SONA. This year, she went with a Rajo Laurel Filipiniana. The architectural lines on the white dress gave it a contemporary feel. She paired it with a simple white Neil Felipp clutch. Yannie is the wife of  Palawan 1st District Representative Franz Alvarez.
