The Dangers of Hooking Up Without Protection

By Jacqueline Ariason September 25, 2017

Hookup culture is not a new concept. Vanity Fair notes that it has existed for a hundred years. Now, it’s more common among millennials thanks to the convenience brought by online dating apps.

I personally don’t engage in hookups, even when I was single. It’s more out of preference than moral reasons. That also doesn’t mean that I look down on people who do because 1. it’s their body and 2. it’s their business. It’s all good as long as they don’t harm themselves in the process. But there’s still concern for those who are not cautious.

There are times when I see women worrying about their period being late after hooking up with a random guy. (Yes, they post that on Twitter.) Oftentimes, a fun story time among friends would become a mini-intervention because they didn’t use a condom. Worse, they’re not on the pill either.

It makes you wonder why people sometimes disregard the safety precautions of sex. Don’t they realize that using protection during hookups not only prevents unwanted pregnancies, but also STDs?

What’s scary is that people don’t bother asking if their date has a condom or has gotten tested. Broadly cited a study, stating that people are mostly scared to pose the question once they’re in the mood. There’s also the possibility of the date not answering honestly. In the writer’s case, her date tried to trick her into having sex without a condom, proving a point that men will do anything just to get their way.

On the other hand, Revelist also listed down reasons why women hate using condoms. These include the latex smelling bad and feeling less arousing, and feeling that it ruins the mood when a man stops to put one on. Again, not judging them for knowing what they want at the heat of the moment. But is it worth it to compromise your health during a one night stand? Nonetheless, no one should disregard every precaution for pleasure.

Ladies, if you really insist on not using a condom to prevent pregnancies, you should try getting an IUD. But still get checked and tested from time to time to be sure that you’re clean. Guys should too, and they should also bring a pack of condoms if they plan to sleep around. You’re doing yourself and your date a favor when you ensure that you have a healthy sexual lifestyle.
