Local fashion is becoming more innovative every year. We saw this firsthand at StyleFestPH 2019 last Nov. 4 to 6.

For the second year in a row, Globe set the stage for established and up-and-coming designers in the country. Can’t you tell that we’re still not over it even though it’s been almost a month? If you missed it and also looking to catch it next year, here are our highlights from all three days.

A different kind of pageantry

Smile and wave!

Paloma Zobel and her Piopio team outdid themselves with their pageant-inspired show during the first day of StyleFestPH 2019. Walking to the tune of “Ikaw Ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko,” models wore sashes representing various Philippine provinces known for their indigenous textiles.

Piopio is known for working with local weavers to create fabrics. In a previous interview, one of their designers told us they also use whatever existing materials they have on-hand to design their pieces. How cool is that?

Our dream gowns and suits

Chris Nick presented a modern Filipiniana collection, which he said is his way of veering away from traditional notions of the conservative Maria Clara. It featured cropped butterfly-sleeved tops, frilly blazers paired with high-waisted bottoms, and barong-inspired dresses. Our eyes went straight to the non-traditional terno suits and we want to wear to our next board meeting.

Meanwhile, Mark Bumgarner brought his usual evening wear, also with a modern Filipiniana twist. Aside from his popular ballgowns, we saw his take on the baro’t saya, some floral pieces, and billowy silk sleeves. (Ugh, we need to attend a wedding so we have an excuse to wear these elegant pieces.)

On the hunt for up-and-coming designers

We’re watering our plants in these Ia Coca dresses from now on

In case you didn’t know: Globe holds a Designer Mentorship Program where eight aspiring designers will get the chance to present collections for either 0917 Lifestyle or Zalora. The winner of the program would be announced at StyleFestPH.

This year, Ia Coca and Adrian Sahagun won the competition under Zalora and 0917 Lifestyle, respectively. Coca created a garden-themed collection with jewel-toned pieces and bags in the shape of watering cans. While Sahagun went for a grungy collection with jackets that can be converted into bags.

Ready for battle (aka, EDSA traffic)

We’re definitely looking out for their pieces online.

Learning about trends

As an online publication, we take every chance to learn about emerging trends. So we attended the StyleFestPH’s Trend Talk featuring trend forecasting agency Fashion Snoops during day three. They gave us insight that content creators, fashion designers, and entrepreneurs can use for their respective ventures.

Bang Pineda’s 120-piece collection

If we wear this 0917 Lifestyle x Bang Pineda jacket, are we officially members of the Bang Gang?

The designer celebrated his birthday with a bang (pun definitely intended) with a 120-piece collection for the Bang Pineda brand and his collaboration with 0917 Lifestyle. The show was divided into parts, each presenting different pieces—from all-black BDSM-inspired pieces, denim on denim, to suits in neon shades.

The show also featured celebrities like Jake Cuenca, Awra Briguela, Rayver Cruz, and Vice Ganda.
