While everyone fusses over the hotly anticipated homecoming of Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (while simultaneously dreading the traffic that will be caused by her grand parade this afternoon), we would like to point out that she’s not the only beauty pageant titlist causing a furor in the media.
48-year-old Babylyn Decena-Newfield is also in town after winning the fifth Mrs. Grandma Universal 2016 in Sofia, Bulgaria last January 21, which also happens to be Grandma’s Day.
Babylyn bested 50 other contestants after being handpicked by Mrs. Grandma Universal international pageant director Ovette Ricalde to join.
“It is an honor,” she told Inquirer.net during a press con. “This is the first Grandma Universal title for the Philippines.”
“It is a privilege that, at this age, I can still win a title,” she added.
Winning a beauty pageant title in her golden years isn’t the only jewel on her crown, so to speak. For one, she is the chief executive officer and president of Cartridge World-Philippines. Also, at almost 50 years old, the lady does muay Thai, which is what set her apart from the other grandmothers in the contest, who mostly sang, danced, and recited poetry, Inquirer.net reports.
Perhaps the traditional Thai combat sport is what kept her in shape after becoming a mother of four, and subsequently, a grandmother of four? According to her, she didn’t have to make a lot of lifestyle changes before the pageant, apart from maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and practicing good skincare.
The annual Mrs. Grandma Universal pageant was first held in 2012 and is open to grandmothers who have the qualities of an ideal grandmother: nurturing, beautiful, elegant, and confident.
Previous title holders include Ivana Hamra of Sweden, Marleny Figueroa de Reyes of Guatemala, Syntia Ong of Malaysia, and Christine Kam of Singapore.
