Meghan Markle Has Her Own Recipe For this Filipino Dish

By Tisha Ramirezon February 22, 2018

Aside from knowing how to speak Filipino, Meghan Markle is also familiar with our cuisine. When she was still active on her blog, the actress shared her recipe for adobo. According to Today, she likes to prepare this meal on Sundays when she’s spending time with friends and family. This sounds exactly like every Filipino family, right?

In her blog post she wrote, “I enjoy making slow-cooked food on Sundays, like Filipino-style chicken adobo.” What does she add to her version of the dish? “It’s so easy—combine garlic, soy (or Bragg Liquid Aminos), vinegar, maybe some lemon and let the chicken swim in that sauce until it falls off the bone in a Crock Pot.” Is anyone else craving for adobo now too?

If you’re wondering why Meghan knows so much about Filipino culture, it’s because of where she spent her childhood, “Growing up in LA, with its melting pot of vast and varied cultures, I was no stranger to the Filipino community. I can whip up a big pot of chicken adobo like it’s nobody’s business, you’ll occasionally hear me toss out a ‘Salamat po’ conversationally…”

If you’re hungry for adobo and want to try out Meghan’s version, check out her recipe below. Tag us in some photos too if you get the chance, we’d love to see them.

Ingredients

2 tbsp. vegetable oil
3 pounds chicken
1 large sliced onion
2 tbsp. minced garlic
1/3 cup white vinegar
2/3 cups soy sauce
1 tbsp. garlic powder
1 tbsp. black pepper
1 bay leaf

Procedure

1. Heat oil in a large skillet on medium heat
2. Add the chicken and cook until golden brown
3. Remove the chicken from the pan and add the onions and garlic
4. Add vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and bay leaf into the pan
5. Once everything is combined, place the chicken back in the pan and set to high heat and let the mixture boil
6. Reduce the heat, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 40 minutes
