With all the hype surrounding Avengers: Infinity War, some of you may have overlooked another film: Ready Player One. This fantasy movie is based on the book of the same name written by Ernest Cline. The short premise of Ready Player One is that it is based in a dystopian-like world where everyone has started to use the OASIS, a virtual world, as an escape. You can be anyone you want in this world and visit different planets depending on what you’re looking for.
I remember having to read this novel for my literature class in college and I thoroughly enjoyed it. At that time, I wasn’t reading as much I used to so being required to finish this novel was a welcome assignment. Unlike the books I had read in the past, this had a different plot. It was filled with action, adventure, and lots of ’80s throwbacks. When I heard that it was going to be turned into a movie, I got really excited and had certain expectations.
I finally got to watch it this week and I was not disappointed. Of course, like any movie based on a novel, you can’t expect it to be exactly the same. Although there were some details that were changed, I still appreciated the overall outcome.
I was especially impressed with how they made the OASIS. It looked straight out of a video game but with the highest definition. All the characters looked so cool and it looked like a game I would want to play (even if I’m not into video games).
Another is the ’80s nostalgia. I’m not old enough to get all the references but there were some that piqued my interest like the fashion choices, background music, and references to past movies like Back to the Future. Even the special effects sounded like it came from an ’80s sci-fi film.
Aside from these, I love the Easter egg hunt plot of the film. No, this isn’t the Easter egg hunt you might be thinking about. “In computer software and media, and Easter egg is an intentional inside joke, hidden message or image, or secret feature of a work.” So, in the movie you will follow the different characters who try to pass the challenges set up in the OASIS, hunt for keys, and try to figure out where the Easter egg could be.
If you’re looking for a feel-good, sci-fi film centered around videos games and ’80s goodness, Ready Player One is still showing in cinemas so catch it while you can.
